NC Quick Pass is the N.C. Turnpike Authority’s all-electronic toll-collection program on the Triangle Expressway, the Monroe Expressway and I-77 Express Lanes that offers drivers two ways to pay for tolls: a pre-paid transponder account or the post-paid Bill by Mail program.

A prepaid transponder is the easiest and most cost-effective way to pay tolls. Using a prepaid transponder provides drivers on tolls and allows you to pay tolls in up to 19 states.

Drivers who do not wish to open an account will pay through the post-paid Bill by Mail program. Under this program, the registered owner of the vehicle receives an invoice in the mail at the higher Bill by Mail rate.

If your vehicle traveled on any North Carolina toll facility, you as the registered owner of the vehicle will receive an invoice in the mail. If you do not believe it is your license plate number on the Bill by Mail invoice, you may dispute the toll.

If you have a NC Quick Pass account, you may receive an invoice if you traveled in the I-77 Express and did not meet the HOV requirements.

You could receive an invoice if your transponder is not detected on the toll facility and the license plate is not listed on the NC Quick Pass account. Transponders typically are not detected because they are installed improperly. Visit our installation instructions to make sure your transponder is installed correctly.

You could also receive an invoice if your transponder was deactivated due to a zero or negative balance. If your account has insufficient funds, NC Quick Pass automatically suspends your account, deactivates your transponder, and notifies you by mail or email. To reinstate your account, you must pay all outstanding toll charges, processing fees and civil penalties (if applicable). You must also refill the required prepaid account balance.

You could also receive an invoice if you traveled in the I-77 Express and did not meet the HOV requirements.

Drivers who do not wish to open an account will pay through the post-paid Bill by Mail program.

You can pay by:

  • Paying now online.
  • Calling the customer service center.
  • Paying in person at a customer service center.
  • Mailing a check or money order. Please do not mail cash.

Visit the Contact Us page for details on how to reach us. Please note that depending on the due date of your invoice, you may be subject to additional fees.

You may have seen a postpaid toll charge on your account statement because your toll transactions are being captured by your license plate(s) rather than your transponder. Please make sure your transponder is installed correctly. If you need a new transponder, you can order one by logging into your account.

You could also receive an invoice if you traveled in the I-77 Express and did not meet the HOV requirements.

You can dispute a toll to NC Quick Pass within 30 days of the date of the invoice. Otherwise, you waive the right to dispute the toll(s), and the invoice must be paid by the due date.

If you would like to dispute tolls charged outside of North Carolina please contact that state’s agency.

If your NC Quick Pass transponder or NC Quick Pass Flex transponder malfunctions during the two-year warranty period, you may return it to a customer service center for a replacement at no charge as long as there are no signs of mishandling or damage. After the warranty period expires, customers will need to purchase a new transponder.
